Guyana Qualifies For CONCACAF Women`s Gold Cup

GEORGETOWN/ CUBA –Guyana has qualified for the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup for the first time, rallying for a 3-1 victory over Cuba on Saturday and completing the eight-team field.

Mid-fielder Ashley Rodrigues scored her fourth goal in seven games and led the rally for the Lady Jaguars, who advanced 3-2 on aggregate in the two-leg Caribbean playoff.

Guyana joins fellow Caribbean qualifiers Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago, Central American sides Guatemala and Costa Rica, and North American teams Canada, Mexico and the United States in the Women`s Gold Cup, set for late October and early November.

Rodrigues` goal in the 37th minute equalized after Cuba had taken the lead two minutes earlier on a strike by Yezenia Gallardo, her seventh in five qualifying matches. Brittany Persaud put Guyana ahead in the 44th minute and defender Justine Rodrigues added the insurance tally three minutes into the second half.
