More than 20 businesses lost in Mahdia fire, dozens homeless

MAHDIA -More than 20 structures were flattened sometime last night when a fire of supposed electrical origin raged through the business community of Mahdia, Region 8.

Guyana News Online understands that the devastation has left millions in losses and dozens homeless.

Around midnight the blaze was supposedly under control and contained by a corrugated zinc fence bordering an apartment complex.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds is expected to visit the region sometime today.

Region Eight Chairman -Senor Bell said in a press report that Mahdia’s “whole arcade was in flames.”

“We can’t do anything but stand and look,” he said in the report.

The arcade in question has reportedly been in existence for over 20 years and Mahdia is still recovering from recent severe flooding.

It is the opinion of residents that the unavailability of a fire department in Mahdia contributed significantly to the magnitude of the yesterday’s damages.

The gold mining community is home to the regional administration of Region 8. It also houses a hospital, police station and several other governmental agencies.

Mahdia is home to over 4000 residents, which includes residents the neighboring Amerindian village of Campbell Town.
