Three Guyanese on trial for JFK bombing plot, trial set to start

by: Chad Bray

NEW YORK (WSJ) -A naturalized American citizen from Guyana, Russel Defreitas, goes on trial later this week on federal charges which suggest he wanted to carry out a bombing at Kennedy Airport, that he hoped would rival the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, damage the U.S. economy and allow him to profit from the ensuing chaos.

But attorneys for Defreitas, a 66-year-old former air-cargo worker at the airport, say there is no evidence that he took “concrete” steps toward blowing up aviation fuel tanks and a pipeline there.

On trial with Mr. Defreitas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Guyana, will be two other Guyanese nationals.
